Rétrofictions. Montréal : John Latour, 2012

Rétrofictions is an experimental and collaborative artist publication that juxtaposes six photographic artworks by John Latour alongside works of fiction by Jennifer Allen, Marina Endicott, Cynthia Imogen Hammond, Lea Nakonechny, Eduardo Ralickas and Jean-Éric Riopel. The erasure of history creates a space for new stories to be imagined.

Rétrofictions est une publication d’artiste de nature expérimentale et collaborative qui juxtapose six œuvres photographiques avec des œuvres de fiction par Jennifer Allen, Marina Endicott, Cynthia Imogen Hammond, Lea Nakonechny, Eduardo Ralickas et Jean-Éric Riopel. À partir de l’effacement du passé, un espace pour imaginer de nouvelles histoires se crée.

The City of Ottawa’s Public Art Program acquired two drawings, Wooden cabinet (2010) and Brass chandelier (2010), for its Fine Arts Collection. They are presented in the exhibition Close to Home at the Ottawa City Hall Art Gallery from July to September 2012.

John Latour: Artist’s Books, Pages, and Facsimiles

This exhibition highlights the role that gothic literature plays in Latour’s artistic production and demonstrates how his early artist’s books directly led to an ongoing series of page art. It also includes a number of facsimiles of works on display that allude to the nineteenth-century literary motif of the double.

Cette exposition souligne le rôle que la littérature gothique joue dans la production artistique de Latour et montre comment ses livres d’artistes ont conduit directement à une série d’art textuel (« page art ».) Elle comprend aussi un nombre de fac-similés des œuvres exposées qui font allusion au motif du « double » dans la littérature du dix-neuvième siècle.

Halcyon daysze reflects the artist’s fascination for the ways in which we connect with the past, and how this activity is mediated through objects, texts, and images. Through his work in sculpture, text-based art and modified found photographs, Latour challenges the notion of nostalgia while exploring a fragile past inhabited by elusive subjects.

Halcyon daysze est le reflet de la fascination de l’artiste pour les liens que nous entretenons avec le passé et comment cela se traduit sous forme d’objets, de textes et d’images. Par le truchement de sculptures, d’œuvres textuelles et de photographies trouvées modifiées, Latour aborde la notion de nostalgie tout en explorant un passé fragile, peuplé de sujets insaisissables.
